The grass is turning green … in February! It has been a mild winter in comparison to most. We made it through winter without starting the snow blower … although I shouldn’t say that too loud. It is Iowa after all. The standing joke is “if you don’t like the weather, just wait a minute.”
This year, we are experiencing weather with fewer “bumps” in terms of volatility. That’s a bit how it is with family. But, just wait a minute and things will change. One child will be graduating from college, one child will be graduating from high school and the youngest will be experiencing a move for the first time in his life. We are moving to a new home. It will be the first home my husband and I have purchased together. It’s a big deal … for everyone. There is underlying current of emotion and anxiety. It is change.
Facing uncertainty, I feel like I am sitting on a bubble … bracing for the impending “burst!” That’s what usually happens in this blessing called family. Or, is it something else? Just maybe, it is God telling me to just sit there. “Be still” and wait expectantly for whatever He has in store.
As a multi-tasking, recovering perfectionist, that’s not in my “wheelhouse.” However, God provides opportunities for me to experience His daily faithfulness. He reveals that He has a plan. I have to intentionally look for it. I need to “be still” and seek Him. For years, I found myself “in it,” but not “breathing it in” and experiencing it. The world and my circumstances were “screaming” at me, while God was gently whispering to me. As a Christian woman, wife and step mom (and full-time professional), life is a continual process of making every effort to block out the noise and focus on His whisper. After several not-so-subtle reminders these past few months, I am fully aware of God at work in our lives and His plan for our future. I just need to trust, be still, look and listen.
If you need a sign of God’s grace and unending mercy, just look out your window at the grass turning green in February. It is not only a foreshadowing of surprising things to come; it is also a mere “whisper of His unending faithfulness.” Don’t just be in it … be still … and experience it. Take your shoes off and wiggle your toes in it!
